Meet the TurboTeam: Matheus Couto

Matheus Couto is a Software Architect at TurboTenant.

TurboTenant is currently made up of over 80 full-time employees, most of whom are based in Colorado near either our Fort Collins or Denver offices. The exception is our Engineering team, which is made up of experts living all over the world, crisscrossing languages and time zones to work together at making our product the best in the industry.

One such engineering expert is Matheus Couto, Software Architect at TurboTenant. At our annual Obsess Fest, in which TurboTenant flies every employee into Colorado for a week of bonding and strategizing, we talked with Matheus about what makes TurboTenant such a great place for international team members to work.

Matheus Couto

What’s your name and where are you from?

My name is Matheus, and I come from Brazil.

How long have you been at TurboTenant?

I’ve been at TurboTenant for two and a half years so far.

What’s a unique aspect of being an engineer at TurboTenant?

Well, I guess the thing that pops into my mind right now is you have a lot of freedom to do things the way you think best suits the solution. And also, there’s a lot of help around with other teams and other people. There’s plenty of people around to help you out with many different things. So, yeah, I do like the freedom aspect and also the support from everyone.

Describe a recent engineering challenge you tackled?

All right, so we were having some issues with the condition report. I mean, we did that a couple months ago, and we were struggling with some of the users that couldn’t go through the whole process or had some issues saving it. But we recently got rid of that bug.

As a remote international engineer, how does TurboTenant ensure that you feel included?

So, I feel like at TurboTenant I have a lot of other people like me which are working abroad across the world, so I don’t feel like I’m the only one in that position. And also, I feel like all of our process are online, so I don’t have any issue picking up whatever issues are going on or whatever topics are being discussed. I feel very included in that way. So it’s very connected in terms of information.

What initially drew you to TurboTenant?

I had a lot of different interviews, not only for TurboTenant but also for other companies. But the way people talk about the company is really different. I have worked at previous companies where people you talk to have a lot of pressure for different things. And you can feel that when the person is talking to you.

But when I was being interviewed by TurboTenant’s employees, they were very positive about the company. They had a lot of positive feelings about the company, and that was one of the main things that I was looking for. So, yeah, that definitely hooked me immediately.

Can you share an example of how a specific TurboTenant Be Better virtue impacted your work?

I feel like Increase Velocity is one of the Turbo values that I like the most because we do have a lot of different processes in my team because I work on the mobile team, and the mobile team has a lot of frictions in the mobile process. And so I always feel like we are a little bit behind of the other web project and the back end project. So, trying to keep up with the velocity of the other teams is always on my mind.

So I do like the idea of pushing forward and being fast. And of course, not always go and break things, but try to be as fast as we can as a team.
